Seagrass
The seagrass compilation datasets for the Great Barrier Reef, Torres Strait and Gulf of Carpentaria provide data on the presence and absence of seagrass accross the north-eastern Australian marine regions. The GBR Seagrass mapping synthesis published through the NESP TWQ Project 5.4 covered surveys from 1984 – 2018, including presence and absence data for 81,387 sites. The Torres Strait and Gulf of Carpentaria synthesis released as part of NESP MaC Round 1 covers a period of 40 years, including presence/absence data for 48,612 sites at 641 individual or composite meadows.
Combining the two layers, the GBR and TS/GOC datasets shows seagrass presence (green points) and absence (white points) of seagrass. Explore the interactive map here.

Seagrass well plate herbicide exposure experiment. This twelve well plate toxicity assay using single shoots of the seagrass species Halophila ovalis has been developed and validated against potted and hydroponic exposures of the same species. This assay will allow us to rapidly test the combined impacts of herbicides and thermal stress along with herbicide mixtures. (Australian Institute of Marine Science, Townsville)
Halophila ovalis is a fast growing species often found growing in places where the sediment is disturbed.
