Marine sediments in the Oceanic Shoals CMR

The type, size and distribution of sediments on the seabed plays an important role in determining the suitability of a given area for settlement by benthos.  For example, filter feeders like sponges must attach themselves to a rocky substrate or get swept away by tidal currents.  

The MARine Sediment (MARS) database contains detailed information on seabed sediment characteristics for samples collected from Australia's marine jurisdiction, including parts of the Oceanic Shoals CMR. Use the interactive map below to see which areas of the CMR have seabed sediments made up of a higher (red) versus lower (blue) percentage of mud.
