Aerial view of Long Reef near Moa Island in the western Torres Strait. This reef, like many in the western TS consists predominantly of sand banks with little coral cover, but with abundant seagrass and algae. No wonder this area is dugong and turtle paradise!

Despite persistently strong currents and poor visibility (<2m) in the western Torres Strait, some reefs have surpisingly high coral cover.

Mer (Murray) Island has no jetty or boat ramp. An entrance to the island has been cleared through the reef enabelingthe barge to land on the beach at high tide.
